Week 0 Recap

Week Zero is in the books for this years football season.  It may not have been all that we hoped and dreamed for, but it certainly was not a major set back.  We finished 3-3 for the weekend, and made 0.25 units, for approximately a 4% return.  We're looking to profit over the long haul and each week will be looking at things in terms of units and return, but more importantly hope to be on the plus side over the long-term.  A quick run through how we did.

  • Wisconsin -32.5: We were able to cover this by beating the closing line of 35.  The first night of the year produced the first backdoor cover or loss of the year depending on how you look at it.
  • UNLV +14 2H:  We released this play via Twitter @TheSportsMarket  At the half Wisconsin was covering the game line, with a 37-3 lead.  We felt that not only did this provide us a hedge and a large middle of Wisconsin by 33 to 48, but UNLV did not look as bad as the first half score indicated.  They had moved the ball on Wisconsin's defense, but missed two field goals.  Combine this with the likelihood that Wisconsin would be pulling its starters and we thought not only could we capitalize on a large middle, but had a positive EV situation looking at this as an independent bet.
  • Memphis +31: This was a 1/2 unit play we released via Twitter, based on game day suspension news.  Despite beating the closing line, Mississippi St. was able to overcome their suspensions and take it to the Tigers.
  • Akron +34: The Zips offense appeared to be over matched throughout the game.  They did not gain even 100 yards.  Perhaps we underestimated Ohio St.'s defense and will consider this moving forward.  Ohio St.'s offense was a bit better than we expected, however getting no points from the Zips is what did us in here.
  • James Madison +18: The Dukes proved to be out classed from the get go.  North Carolina easily over came a tumultuous off season for an easy cover.
  • South Florida +10: This line ballooned to 11.5 at one point on Friday, which frustrated us.  We aim to try and get the best of every line and knowing what a public team Notre Dame is, this is something we should have waited on.  Luckily, there was still plenty of value in USF +10.  An awkward game with multiple delays ensued on Saturday, however it was a number of miscues for the Irish that did them in.  The Irish had 5 turnovers, 3 of which occurred in the red zone.  Despite not beating the closing line, we will continue to look for value playing against Notre Dame all year.

The following are some games that are currently on our radar as we begin to breakdown Week 2 of college football:

  • Oklahoma St. -14
  • Ohio St./Toledo under 50.5
  • Wisconsin -21 (This is most likely to rise, and already has from -18.  We'll have to examine if there is still value at -21)
  • Wisconsin / Oregon St. over 57
  • South Carolina -2.5 (Important to get on the right side of 3, here)
  • Brigham Young +7
  • Utah +9.5
  • Connecticut -1
  • Michigan +3.5
We'll likely return tomorrow to discuss Week 1 of the NFL.
